Built-in functions

  • Morphological search

In common texts (e-mails, web pages) many unknown words occur in other than their basic form. If the morphological search is active, HandyLex will correctly look up the corresponding word in its basic form. For example if you enter the English word „went”, the headword „go” is looked up.

  • Phonetic search

If you are not sure how a given foreign word is spelled, you can try to find it by writing it approximately as it is pronounced. For example, in the English-Czech dictionary, if you enter „ček”, the headwords „check”, „cheque” as well as „Czech” will be found. This function is only available for some languages.

  • Two-way search

When working with a foreign language you often need to alternately look up words from both languages (in both sides of the dictionary). If this option is active, HandyLex automatically switches the direction of translation.
This option is naturally only available in bilingual dictionaries.
If a given word exists in both of the languages, HandyLex will look up and display all relevant hits; the headword from the other language is distinguished by ~ (tilde) for clarity. This happens, for example, in English-Czech dictionary when entering words such as „list”, „police”, „cop” etc.

  • Full text search

Full text search can be used to look up words occurring anywhere in the dictionary within other entries or even in the other side of the dictionary. You can use this function to look up phrases, collocations and word groups occurring in examples, notes etc.
